Saints Row The Third: Gangstas In Space releases next week
![]()
It's no secret that I really loved Saints Row The Third. It's one of the most stupid, outlandish and just plain fun games that's been released. Today, THQ announced that the next DLC for the game, Gangstas in Space will be released next Tuesday on Xbox Live and the Playstation Network.
From the visionary mind of big-shot Hollywood director Andy Zhen, the Saints are back once again to complete the final scenes for their future blockbuster, “Gangstas In Space”. With the world waiting in anticipation of the very first Saints movie, there’s a lot on the line, and it’s your job to act the part. Starring the Boss and introducing Jenny Jaros as Princess Kwilanna, you’ll experience action, drama, blow-up dolls, and one hell of an alien invasion through a series of new missions.
It will be available for $6.99 for those without the Season Pass. Those who do have the Season Pass will get it for free.

What I Missed

Wait, you DIDN'T finish L.A. Noire last year?!
Last year was a huge year for games. Games like Skyrim, Deus Ex and several other big name games came out and, as a result, there arejust some games that flew under the radar. For me, it’s a little bit different. See, I actually bought a lot of these games…and I do mean a lot. It’s not that I had a bunch of spare cash, but I was able to find several great deals on a bunch of interesting games.
That said, my collection has started to gather a lot of clutter and I’ve decided that I have to get through some of these games before the bigger games of 2012 hit. So, this is a new series for Talking About Games where I’m going through my collection and giving you some brief thoughts on each game.

Rockstar Trying to Bring the Payne
Rockstar is returning to the Max Payne franchise, but much like Far Cry 2 Max Payne 3 will deviate from the formula that made the Max Payne games unique. The character looks different (these are changes to an even more iconic character than Cole in inFamous and that caused a tremendous uproar). Gone is the gritty New York City setting and noir feel. Gone are the comic book panel style story-telling.
Seemingly all that remains is the bullet-time action elements and the name. Given that gunplay is not the strength of Rockstar Studios, one wonders how well that element might hold up in the game. Perhaps that's why the following trailer clearly states that all footage is actual gameplay. While the game lacks most of the things that say Max Payne to me, I'm hoping that, like Far Cry 2, this turns out to be a great title.
Max Payne 3 releases May 15th on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Alan Wake and Remedy's Big Week
Today, Thursday February 16th, kicks of a big week for Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment with the release of Alan Wake for the PC. Prior to releasing Alan Wake on the Xbox 360 in 2010, Remedy was best known for the Max Payne series which was developed for PC and later ported to the consoles, so tweets today have hailed the release as a homecoming.
The release has been well received by PC gamers, as the full Xbox title plus the two DLC episodes (The Signal and The Writer) are available on Steam for $29.99. Additionally, if you order the game before February 23rd you get the limited edition content for free. This content is the developer commentary, a PDF of the book that come with the original collectors edition and a copy of the soundtrack for the game (this soundtrack is the game music, not the licensed music associated with the ending of the episodes). Not surprisingly this quickly grabbed the top spot on the Steam sales charts.
Then, next Wednesday, Remedy will be releasing Alan Wake: American Nightmare on Xbox Live Arcade. This title not only furthers Alan's story but also includes a survival mode. For a game that was critically acclaimed but commericially a let down, Remedy has shown a willingness to keep investing in the IP. Given that Alan Wake was my Game of the Year for 2010 I appreciate their support. Of course, given what happens to Sam Lake in the final Developer Diary, I can only hope that we get more Alan Wake in the future.

Editorial: Assassin's Greed

This past Wednesday, Ubisoft announced a release date for the next installment in their much discussed and debated franchise, Assassins Creed 3. Naturally, it garnered a tepid reaction from gamers all over the globe. People have grown to have a love/hate relationship with the game over the years. How it got to that point is the result of greed both by gamers and Ubisoft.
Fans can deny it all they want, but their constant demand for newness led to the game creator’s lust for people’s money. Fans wanted new franchises and Ubisoft was happy to serve them up the same game with a new coat of paint on it every year.

Double Fine Kickstarter has nearly raised $2 million
Last week, we briefly discussed Double Fine's recent Kickstarter campaign to raise money for their new point and click adventure game. At that point, the company had almost raised a million dollars in a single day. Well, the Double Fine train seems to keep rolling. With twenty six days left, the company has nearly raised $2 million.
Tim Schafer, Double Fine's CEO, took to YouTube last night to make some pretty intersting announcements. The game will be available on PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android devices. In addition, the game will be translated into Spanish, Italian, German and French. Finally, and perhaps most interstingly, when the game launches, backers of the Kickstarter campaign will be able to download the game DRM-free. It's a pretty cool bonus to an already cool project.

Back To The Future: The Ultimate Popcorn Movie

The year was 1985 (duh!). I was in a student in JHS 141 in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. I was at the movies (don't remember which movie I saw that day) and saw a trailer for a movie that would become my all time favorite movie. The trailer wasn't much really. Just someone walking down a road, shot from the legs down. Kicking a tire, then opening a car door and climbing inside. Then, this individual started punching in numbers into a keypad and reached for a pair of sunglasses. Next shot is from outside the car door. The window opens up and you see Michael J. Fox inside the car. You hear a woman asking him, "How far are you going?" to which he responds, "About 30 years" Then the familiar Huey Lewis and The News "Back In Time" song kicks in and you see the title "Back To The Future" coming soon across the screen.

Darksiders II Release Date Confirmed

It seems we now have a solid release date for Darksiders II.
THQ has confirmed, through the Darksiders Official Twitter Account, when Death will be ready to ride.
Oh by the way.... You can get your hands on @Darksiders II on June 26th #Darksiders2
I personally can't wait. The original Darksiders came out of nowhere for me and became one of my favorite games of 2010. Here's to hoping this sequel doesn't disappoint.

E3 2012 to feature HUGE next-gen announcements!

According to mcvuk.com, Sony and Microsoft will announce their next-gen consoles at this years E3. This seems like a legitimate move by both companies and a way for them to assure third party developers that neither console will be left behind in the next console race. And let's not forget Nintendo's Wii U -- which could be overshadowed by Sony, and Microsoft if they do decide to announce their new toys to the world.

Happy Valentine's Day Dear Esther
January was a slow month for gaming but the industry appears to be trying to make up for it in February. Last week saw the release of big name titles Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and The Darkness II. This week Sony is releasing Twisted Metal and the PlayStation Vita First Edition Bundle. In addition, Alan Wake will release on the PC via Steam. That's a lot of content for gamers.
So it is possible that Dear Esther, a small Indie title, would slip in under the radar. But Dear Esther appears to be one of those indie games that is special and may find a bigger audience than one might expect. The game's tagline is “A deserted island…a lost man…memories of a fatal crash…a book written by a dying explorer.” Each play through of the game is supposed to be different with a heavy focus on story.
Built on Valve's Source engine, the game is currently a PC exclusive and planned for release on Steam on February 14. The price will be $9.99.

Alan Wake Developers Talk American Nightmare Story
As part of this year's Xbox Live Arcade House Party Remedy Entertainment, the creators of Alan Wake, are releasing a stand alone Alan Wake game titled Alan Wake: American Nightmare. In the first developer diary for the game they talked about how the game's original conception, the survival mode, was expanded to include a story. In this developer diary they talk more about the story and it's antagonist, Mr. Scratch, who makes a bit of surprise appearance (see if you catch it).
Alan Wake: American Nightmare is scheduled for release on February 22 exclusively on Xbox Live Arcade for 1200 points ($15).

Twisted Memories

Twisted Metal has been in my life for a LONG time. Before I actually owned a PlayStation, I had played the original Twisted Metal. Twisted Metal 2 is probably one of my most enjoyable gaming experiences and Twisted Metal: Head On was one of the main reasons I wanted to get a PSP.
As we are only a couple days away from the release of the latest Twisted Metal installment, I thought it would be fitting if I took a trip down memory lane and shared my thoughts on all of the Twisted Metal games. Some of these games I’ve played recently and some I haven’t played in years. Nevertheless, I have played them all (minus the online edition of Twisted Metal Black), and I want you to understand why I absolutely adore this series and why I’m worried that the new Twisted Metal is destined to disappoint.

Sony Releases List of Compatible PSP Games For Vita

Just a few days before PS Vita First Edition Bundles are set to hit retail, Sony has released a list of compatible PSP games that can be downloaded and enjoyed on the new shiny handheld.
The list is quite large and will be made up of about 275 titles (including Minis) at launch with more to follow. Since the Vita will not play UMDs, this is the only way that North American gamers can play some of their PSP favorites on the Vita. If you've previously downloaded any of these games, they can be redownloaded or transfered to your Vita at no extra cost. The rest will be available through the Playstation Store for various prices.
Continue after the break for the full (and really long) list.

Metro: Last Light delayed to 2013

It's a new year and that means that we have a whole new batch of 2012 games that have the potential to get pushed out of this year and into 2013. The first casualty of the year is Metro Last Light, which has just been given a Q1 2013 release date according to THQ's financial earnings report released today.
Metro: Last Light is the sequel to the 2010 title Metro 2033. The game was set in a post-apocalyptic Russia that focused on fighting both humans and mutants in an atmospheric environment scarce of items like health and ammunition. The game is also well known for its use of gas masks that keep the player safe from high radiation in certain sections of the game. While it was released on Xbox 360 it's also held up as one of the best looking PC titles available and is often used for comparing the graphics power a machine.
Metro: Last Light is just the first of many games intended to come out in 2012 that will slip into next year. In the meantime this gives you a chance to play one of the most overlooked games of 2010.

Max Payne 3 gets a date
![]()
The last time we heard from Max Payne 3 it was being delayed to May. It was the latest in a long line of delays stretching out over a year ago. While Max Payne isn't about to challenge Duke Nukem for delays (not yet at least) today we get an actual release date which might just signify that we'll actually see Max's return relatively soon. Although, based on Max's history you may not want to get the date tattooed on your arm just yet.
Max Payne 3 is now set to launch on May 15 in North America and May 18 in Europe for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC version is scheduled for release on May 29 in North America and June 1 in Europe.

PS3 Call of Duty Elite members getting new maps in February

Due to the exclusivity deal between Microsoft and Activision for Call of Duty, Xbox 360 Elite members having been enjoying two brand new maps for Modern Warfare 3 for full week. Today we have learned that PlayStation 3 Call of Duty Elite members can expect the two brand new maps to hit on February 28. The two new maps are Liberation and Piazza.
This delay will likely set the tone for the rest of the "content drops" coming for Call of Duty Elite members over the next year. We can expect about a one month delay for PlayStation 3 players to get the maps after Xbox 360. Of course there's still no word on when non-elite members and PC owners will be able to get their hands on some new content.

343 Industries taking control of Bungie.net Halo services

A post on Bungie.net yesterday announced that the company is preparing to relinquish control of its final vestige of updated Halo-related content. On March 31, all live Halo data will be fully transitioned to 343 Industries. The only remnants of Halo to remain on Bungie.net will be "historical Halo data," which the company intends to retain "for as long as the Internet and Bungie's data storage systems remain functional."
The transition will mark, once and for all, the end of Bungie's association with the iconic game franchise that it created and made it famous. In the future, the names "Bungie" and "Halo" will no longer coincide with one another; each name will be a part of the other's past. Halo will become a part of 343 Industries and Microsoft Studios, while Bungie's future is currently attached to a top secret, in-development project with the working title "Tiger."

Rumor: Next-gen Xbox won't play used games

Along with the unsurprising announcement that Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console will support Blu-ray DVD technology, Kotaku has reported a rumor that the unannounced-but-inevitable future console will somehow eliminate gamers' ability to play used or previously-purchased games.
Exactly how this alleged anti-used technology would work is unknown, but such a feature would effectively take away the service that used-game companies like GameStop rely on, condemning them to an almost-certain doom.
If true, this measure is guaranteed to cause controversy, but it nevertheless represents the next logical step for video game publishers' ongoing feud with the used-game market. Publishers have already begun dissuading gamers from buying used titles with things like online passes and similar content that is only available to customers for free if they buy their games new. However, that content typically costs only a fraction of the game itself when purchased separately, while a full-blown anti-used feature would require every gamer to pay the full market price for every video game they own. That's a drastic escalation on the publishers' part.

Rumor: Microsoft Points on the way out

Microsoft Points are an oft-hated system by many gamers. Many have called for an end to the system and a move to a simpler purchasing system like PlayStation Network has. Most just want buy what they want with real money, not some fake currency where they are forced to spend more than they want when items don't fit within multiples of $5.
If rumors are to be believed apparently Microsoft, too, has grown tired of Microsoft Points. InsideMobileApps is reporting a source has told them that Microsoft Points are set to be phased out by the end of 2012. By then all purchases will be made with real money based on the region of the account. In addition to changing how Xbox Live will work this will also affect the Zune Marketplace and Windows Phone.
Microsoft has yet to confirm the validity of this rumor so we'll have to see how it goes. Personally I don't see why they can't just allow both real money and Microsoft Points to co-exist. They already allow you to purchase Games on Demand using a credit card, it can't be that hard to extend that to other areas.

PSA: Modern Warfare 3 maps now available for Elite members
I have some good news, some bad news and some worse news for fans of Modern Warfare 3.The good news: two new maps have just been released for download. The bad news: these maps are available only to subscribers to Call of Duty Elite. The worse news: if you are a paid subscriber but play on PlayStation 3, you'll have to wait.
If you match the requirements set by Activision then today you can get your hands on the two new maps: Liberation and Piazza. To download your new maps just fire up Modern Warfare 3 and get them from the "Download Elite Content" section inside the in-game store. You can then play the maps in a special Elite-only playlist.
These first two maps are just the beginning of Activision's planned 20 content drops for Elite members over the next year. PlayStation 3 Elite subscribers can expect these two maps at a later date. Non-subscribers will see these maps folded into a normal downloadable map pack once Activision has enough maps to create one.
